To the Honorable Dirk Kempthorne,
Secretary of the Interior; the Honorable
Linda Lingle, Governor of Hawaii; Pua
Aiu, Hawaii State Historic Preservation
Administrator; the Board of Directors of the Bishop Museum; and Timothy Johns,
President, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Bishop Museum;
The Falls
of Clyde is of both state, national, and international significance. Once registered under the Hawaiian flag, she
is the only historic sailing ship left in the isles. Until her recent derigging
by the Bishop Museum she was the only surviving
iron-hulled four-masted full rigged ship in the
world. Today she still remains the only
surviving sail-driven oil tanker.
Designated by the Secretary of the Interior as a National
Historic Landmark, the Falls of Clyde was deemed to possess exceptional value and
quality in illustrating the heritage of the United States. She is one of fewer than 2,500 historic
places to bear this national distinction and only one of thirty-three national
landmarks in Hawaii.
From the voyages of ancient Polynesians to the bombing of
Pearl Harbor, the sea has been one of the greatest influences on Hawaii. Hawaiian monarchs sailed to foreign lands on
tall ships. Immigrants - our ancestors -
came to the isles from Asia, the South Pacific, Europe, and North
America. It is important
that we have the Falls of Clyde to celebrate and interpret Hawaii's maritime history and tell this
story to our children and our visitors.
Where as we believe it is important to save the Falls of Clyde and that it is possible to restore
the ship, we demand that all alternatives to preserve and restore the ship be
explored before the ship is deliberately sunk.
We ask that the Bishop
Museum meet with
concerned groups and individuals in good faith, and that the representatives
and employees of the museum honor this artifact of Hawaiian, American, and
international history with the respect she deserves.
